It has been such a wonderful week here in Jeffrey’s Bay.  Last week Hilliary and I were able to shadow the head nurse on Tuesday.  We arrived early in the morning to help out anywhere that we could.  I was a little nervous when the nurse, Sister Rowan, asked us if we knew how to take people’s blood sugar.  Thankfully, she allowed us to start with easier things like taking temperature, pulse and weight.  Then, Hilliary and I went on to test people’s blood sugar level.  I have never done that before, so I just watched and wrote in the patients’ files while Hilliary pricked their fingers.  I was so surprised that we were able to get so invovled.  The rest of the week was not very busy, but we were able to help in the pharmacy unpacking medicines and filing the patients’ records.

My team had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We are all on a cooking team made up of three people, and each team made two dishes for the meal.  We invited a few South Africans to come celebrate with us, and it was wonderful.  Although I missed my family, it was great to be able to celebrate a time of thanks with my new family here in Jeffrey’s Bay.

  1. Katy,
You never cease to amaze me. The first thing I thought about when you said you were going to work in a clinic was “…but she cries when she gets shots and can’t stand the site of blood.” But obviously God has given you the strength to overcome those “quirks” for the greater good. Even with thousands of miles of separation, you continue to bless my life every day with what you are doing over there.
I know that you hear this from everyone else but me and your friends from the youth group continue to pray for you all the time. Keep working hard.

  2. I have to ecko what Steve says I thought the same exact thing with how you are terrified of blood. I can’t beleive they leave you in charge now that is scary.
Anyway We miss you and cant wait to have you home.
    Love.

  3. Katie before long you’ll be a nurse !Thanksgiving in Africa what was your dinner like ? Traditional or did you sample the local cuisine. The Cincinnati family would like to help with the coloring books and crayons just let us know how. Love Beth

  4. Katie, (I’m one of your mom’s friends). I too am receiving such a great blessing from you and others on your team’s updates. It is just so exciting to see God at work and how His plans are so much better then ours could ever be! I continue to keep you, your team and your Mom, Dad & Justin in my prayers.

  5. Hi Katie,
WOW, its great to see God working through you to minister to others. I was privlidged to see you minister along with the youth group in Ecuador and I will never forget the presence of God as we worked alongside the Ecuadorian people in the work at the clinic. Its ironic how you are once again working within the parameters of a “Clinic”. Its where people go to get their physical needs met, while I know you are there to meet their spiritual needs. May God bless your walk of faith and give you clear direction in your young life as to your next step of faith. Sing us a song Katie.
